May Day March Spotlights Worker Mistreatment in Sunnyside, WA
"The system of corruption persists strongly... they fire you, even if it's illegal." José, a farm worker in Sunnyside, WA, was one of many speaking out about worker mistreatment at a local mushroom farming operation. He showed up for Sunnyside's second annual May Day march, honoring workers and raising awareness about labor rights. "We live in a community where we're 86, 87 percent Latino," mayor Vicky Frausto told us. She was recruited as part of an emerging leaders program through ELLA, a nonprofit facilitating Latina representation in the Yakima valley. The group organized the May Day march, and we spoke with their leadership about the work they do for labor rights and environmental justice. These are our conversations with laborers and ELLA members at Sunnyside's May Day march.
