A Community Marched 25 Miles To Recognize Immigrant Workers
"A lot of people are horrified at what's happening to their neighbors."
Immigrant workers, labor organizers, and community allies gathered in Granger, WA as early as four a.m, on September 19, 2026, embarking on a 25-mile walk to Yakima. The route was an echo of a farmworker march in 1986, one which WA-14 State House candidate Ezequiel Morfin participated in with his dad at the age of 11. "I had the privilege to walk that exact march 40 years ago," he told us. This time, the action was organized by the LCLAA (Labor Council For Latin American Advancement) in coordination with multiple labor unions and community groups. The walk raised funds to support detained migrants and their families.

That afternoon, community gathered at Fullbright Park in Union Gap to celebrate with musical performances, speeches, dances, and food. Organizers we spoke to came from as far away as Seattle and Los Angeles, representing various labor unions and migrant defense projects. Individuals we spoke to emphasized the importance of showing up and not giving in to fear. Danielle Serkatty of the Yakima Immigrant Response Network noted that their support network has grown rapidly, and she's seen firsthand how the community comes together to support their neighbors through donations and volunteer work. Fundraising continues for families affected by detention and the organizations supporting them.
